On Saturday, October 24, Imam Osama led our community in a halaqa on the power of kind words. Allah commands us in the Quran to “speak to people good words” (Al-Baqarah 2:83), and He compares a good word to a good tree whose roots are firm and whose branches reach the sky (Ibrahim 14:24). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that a good word is itself a charity, which means every one of us can give sadaqah many times a day. He also said that whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent. Our words shape the atmosphere of our homes, our masjid, and our workplaces long after they are spoken. A single kind sentence can soften a hard heart, mend a strained relationship, or give someone the strength to keep going.
Living this teaching starts with small, practical choices every day. It begins at home, with how we greet our parents, speak to our spouses, and encourage our children. It continues in how we respond online, where harsh words spread quickly and are rarely taken back. Kind speech does not mean avoiding the truth; it means delivering it with gentleness, wisdom, and sincere care for the listener. Before we speak, we can ask ourselves whether our words are true, whether they are necessary, and whether they are kind. May Allah make our tongues a source of goodness and make us among those whose words bring people closer to Him.
Key Takeaways
- A good word is charity. Every kind word is sadaqah you can give many times a day.
- Speak good or stay silent. If a word won’t help, it doesn’t need to be said.
- Before you speak, ask: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?
