Marriage is a sacred covenant in Islam and a source of tranquility, affection and mercy between spouses. To ensure that every nikah in our community is conducted with proper knowledge and care, Darul Islam refers couples to Mufti Ikram ul-Haq, Imam of Masjid Al-Islam in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, for officiation and guidance.
“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy.”

Arranging Your Nikah
| 1 | Contact Mufti Ikram ul-Haq. Email imam@mai-ri.org well in advance to confirm his availability, the date and location of the nikah, and any requirements. |
| 2 | Obtain a marriage license. For a nikah in Massachusetts, both partners must apply together, in person, with any city or town clerk in the state. There is a three-day waiting period before the license is issued. |
| 3 | Confirm the officiant’s authorization. Because Mufti Ikram ul-Haq resides outside Massachusetts, a Certificate of Solemnization must be obtained from the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth before a ceremony held in Massachusetts. Please allow time for this when planning the date. |
| 4 | Register the marriage. After the nikah, the completed license, with the officiant’s certificate attached, is returned to the issuing clerk so the marriage is legally recorded. |
Elements of the Nikah
| Consent | The free and willing agreement of both the bride and the groom. |
| Wali | The bride’s guardian, whose role the officiant will explain in advance. |
| Witnesses | Two adult Muslim witnesses present at the contract. |
| Mahr | The marital gift from the groom to the bride, agreed upon by both parties. |
| Khutbah | The nikah sermon, traditionally delivered by the officiant before the contract is concluded. |
خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لِأَهْلِهِ
“The best of you are those who are best to their families.”
